In 2019, Apple sold around 60 million AirPods, proof that we’re fans of these nifty buds.
Like with most Apple products, there are hidden features that only true Apple aficionados know. If you’ve got a new pair of AirPods and don’t know how to use them to their full potential, you’ve come to the right place.
Here are the top 10 AirPod tips and tricks.
1. Activate Noise Cancellation for Better Audio
Whether or not you’ve got AirPods bass plug in, you should enable Active Noise Cancellation so you have better audio. This feature adapts to your ear’s shape so you block out external noise and can focus on your favorite tunes.
Do this by holding your AirPod Pro stem or using the functions on your mobile device. First, open the ‘Control Center’ and hold down the volume bar that appears to show the AirPods Pro are connected. Next, tap ‘Noise Cancellation’ at the bottom of the screen and you’re set!
You can also use noise cancellation on one AirPod Pro, useful if you want to take calls with one earbud or you want to extend their battery life. To do this, head to ‘Settings’, ‘Accessibility’, and then ‘AirPods’. Press the toggle next to ‘Noise Cancellation on One AirPod’.
2. Share Audio Between Two Pairs of AirPods
For Apple’s Audio Sharing feature to work, you must use iOS 13.1 or later. This means you can share your device’s audio with a second pair of AirPods via Bluetooth so you can enjoy the same song.
Make sure your AirPods volume is up and play audio on your device. Swipe down from the top-right corner of the screen and tap Control Center. Here, you must tap the icon with the triangle and three circles.
Keep your friend’s AirPods inside their case, flip open the lid, and bring them close to your device. Then a prompt should appear so you can activate the feature.
3. Find Your Misplaced AirPods
You can find your AirPod’s most recent location by opening ‘Find My’ on your iPhone. Tap ‘Devices’ and tap your Airpods Pro. Next, press ‘Play Sound’ if you think they’re nearby. If not, choose ‘Directions’ as the last place they were connected to will appear on the map.

When your AirPods are connected and a call comes through, the ringing tone will interrupt whatever you’re doing. You normally have to take out your iPhone to see who’s calling but you can make Siri announce who it is via your AirPods.
To do this, head to ‘Settings’, then ‘Phone’, and select ‘Announce Calls’. Finally, tap ‘Headphones Only’ and the feature will be activated.
6. Do an Ear Tip Fit Test
“Can you workout with AirPods?” You ask.
An AirPods Pro fit test tells you which out of the replaceable tips work best for your ears so they don’t all out when you exercise. You can always do a trial and error or use Apple’s tip test so you can see if the one you’re trying works well for your ears.
First, head to ‘Bluetooth’, and tap the info button for your AirPods Pro. Then select the ‘Ear Tip Fit Test’. Make sure both AirPods fit well in your ears and tap the ‘Play’ button. Music will play and tell you whether the tips are a good fit.
7. Reset Your AirPods Pro
You can reset your AirPods Pro if they’re not working properly. First, put them in their case and close the lid. Wait 40 seconds and re-open it.
On your device, head to ‘Bluetooth’ and tap the ‘i’ icon. Choose ‘Forget This Device’ to confirm. When the AirPods case is open, hold down the button on the back of the case until the status light flashes amber.
Then, place your AirPods next to your device and follow the instructions so you reconnect them.
8. Check AirPod Battery Life
To check your AirPod’s battery life, open the lid and a notification will appear to show the battery charge for the AirPods and the case. You can always keep one in the case for charging to save battery life and swap when it’s fully charged.
This means you’ll get full stereo audio into mono for the single AirPod.
9. Free Laser Engraving
If you’ve gotten AirPods from the Apple store, you can get a free engraving. Perfect if you’re gifting them to a loved one. Or you can engrave your contact details in the case, useful if you lose them.
