With over one billion monthly active users, Instagram is one of the most popular social media platforms in the world. With so many users, that’s a huge potential audience — if you want to get the best out of Insta, you should consider how to use your story in maximizing your reach. A key part of this is choosing the right Instagram story size, but how do you do it?
Keep reading for our Instagram story guide, so you’ll never have to worry about losing your audience again!
What’s the Best Instagram Story Size?
The ideal dimensions for your Instagram story size are 1080×1920 pixels. If you can stick to this, your story will take up the full screen, and nothing will be cut off, so it looks the most appealing to your audience.
If you upload an image with different dimensions, you have something of a dilemma. Either Instagram will zoom in on your image, lowering quality, or keep it in the original resolution, giving you blank space around it — this doesn’t look as professional or appealing.
What About Aspect Ratio?
That’s only one part of the story, as you need to consider aspect ratio when posting on Instagram too.
9:16 is the regular aspect ratio for Instagram stories. This aspect ratio has a number of resolutions, one of which is 1080×1920, but others include 104×576 and 1600×900.
If you wanted to upload something to your story with different dimensions to standard, you should be okay as long as it has the 9:16 aspect ratio. However, it’s probably best to stick with 1080×1920 where possible.
File Sizes and Formats
Instagram stories won’t work with images larger than 30mb. Generally, this should be more than enough, but raw images often take up more space.
If you’re dealing with a raw image, it makes sense to convert to JPG before uploading to your story and you can always keep the raw file too, in case you need it in the future. However, PNG files are also acceptable.
As you probably expected, videos can be larger. Indeed, they can go up to four GB in total. A video that’s a few seconds in length will usually be fine, but professional videos are often quite a bit larger.
In this scenario, you should convert the video to another format — there are lots of tools online for this if you need them — and reduce the size.
Consider quality over quantity. Short videos are better, and not just because Instagram only allows stories to be a maximum of 15 seconds long.
If you post a video that’s longer, Insta will break it up into 15-second stories, but if you try to upload too many it simply will not allow you to do so.
In reality, 15 seconds should be more than enough. Users are accustomed to short and snappy stories, so it makes sense to adapt your own videos accordingly.
Your Instagram Story
Hopefully, you should have started to get your head around Instagram story size, and how best to maximize your reach. Why not get out there and start posting stories that your audience will love? You might even get some new fans!
